PRESIDENT BARROW HANDS OVER MILLIONS IN FARM EQUIPMENT

His Excellency,  President Adama Barrow, has handed over agricultural equipment valued at millions of Dalasis to selected farmers throughout the country during a ceremony held in Brikamaba, CRR South. The equipment, which includes power tillers, milling machines, threshers, combined harvesters, and tricycles, is funded by the World Bank through the GIRAV project. This handover represents a strategic shift toward mechanised agriculture.Over 400 pieces of modern agricultural production and processing equipment are designed to empower local farmers by encouraging large-scale production and transitioning to commercial agriculture.In his speech at the ceremony, President Barrow praised this initiative as a tangible demonstration of his government's commitment to national food security and sustainability. He emphasised that mechanisation is crucial for transforming the agricultural sector and stated that this equipment will enhance efficiency and increase output throughout the agricultural value chain.The President expressed deep gratitude to the World Bank for its support of Gambian farmers and commended the GIRAV project for promoting climate-smart farming, improved agricultural methods, and mechanisation.He advised farmers to use the equipment sustainably to maximise production.Representatives of farmer associations praised the government, under President Barrow's leadership, for its support. They noted that this initiative marks a historic first where local farmers have free access to mechanised equipment and assured that the equipment would be used for its intended purposes.Other speakers at the ceremony, including the Alkalo, Chief, Regional Governor, and a National Assembly Member, highlighted the significance of this development as a historic milestone in the country’s agricultural transformation. They acknowledged that the challenges faced by farmers had discouraged many young people from pursuing farming as a career.With the introduction of this new equipment, the speakers noted that farmers now have a chance to expand production, create jobs, and drive development.In a related development, President Barrow also presented two new ambulances to the communities of Njoben Health Post and Jamagen Health Post. This meeting was an opportunity for the Gambian leader to highlight his government's commitment to infrastructural development as a key driver of growth. The project will fund the construction of a 5.4 km road from Chamoi Bunda to Limbambulu.Beneficiary communities from the wider Wuli West district attended the meeting and celebrated the launch of this important project.During the meeting, both the Alkalo of Chamoi Bunda and the Chief of Wuli West praised the President and the World Bank for their efforts to transform rural communities and empower farmers.Kebba Sillah, a respected community leader, described the road project as transformative. He emphasised that it offers farming communities better access to markets and services. Mr Sillah also commended the government and the Ministry of Agriculture for providing farmers with subsidies, fertiliser, and seeds, adding that these feeder roads are essential for large-scale agricultural production.The regional chairman of the NPP, Alhaji Bubu Drammeh, also acknowledged President Barrow for his investments in agriculture, which have resulted in increased yields. He credited these improvements to the President's personal commitment and progressive leadership. The regional chairman urged voters to register for the upcoming election and to support the ruling party.District youth representatives Ousman Bah and Aja Fatou Saho praised the project as a significant opportunity for young people to engage in agriculture, facilitating employment and sustainable socio-economic development. PRESIDENT BARROW LAYS FOUNDATION STONE FOR 200KM FEEDER ROADS: $25M WORLD BANK PROJECT TO BOOST AGRICULTURE

President Adama Barrow, accompanied by a high-powered delegation including cabinet ministers, World Bank officials, and other senior government representatives, is embarking on a six-day tour across various regions to lay the foundation stones for over 200 km of feeder roads. These projects, jointly funded by the government and the World Bank with a budget of $25 million, aim to empower rural communities by improving their access to markets.During the tour, President Barrow is expected to lay foundation stones for road projects in selected communities located in the North Bank, Central River, Upper River, and West Coast Regions. He was seen off at the Banjul ferry terminal by Vice President Jallow, several cabinet ministers, and security service chiefs.At the terminal, the President was greeted by a guard of honour from the Gambia Navy before boarding the new Barra ferry to his first destination, Kerr Jatta in the Lower Nuimi District. There, he laid the first stone for a 7.3 km road connecting the communities of Kerr Jatta, Ndofan, and Kerr Walli to the main highway.He also laid the foundation stone for a 9 km road extending from Fass Njaga Choi to Ndungu Kebbeh. Additionally, two other stone-laying ceremonies took place for nearly 13 km of roads in Kerr Selen and Kuntaya, linking several communities in Jokadu. The President then moved on to the Baddibu region, where similar ceremonies were held in Makka Farafenni, Illiasa, and Yallal Tankonjala. Here, he laid the foundation stones for 22 km of road that will connect 12 communities to the main roads.The contracts for these projects have been awarded to Chino Gam, a Chinese construction company, and the projects are expected to take two years to complete. President Barrow described these initiatives as unprecedented and emphasised his government's commitment to providing infrastructural development to enhance socio-economic growth.He stated that these projects will also help diversify road infrastructure developments to reach hard-to-access areas and create opportunities for local farmers. Minister of Agriculture Dr Demba Sabally praised the partnership between the government and the World Bank, asserting that this multi-million dollar project will have a positive impact on agriculture. Momodou Sabally, a presidential adviser, called the project a game-changer in The Gambia's quest for food security and sustainability, noting that farmers will now have easier access to markets.Funding for these projects is provided by the World Bank through a grant under the Gambia Inclusive and Resilient Agricultural Value Chain Development Project.

Fabakary Tombong Jatta, called the proceedings to order, allowing the President to present a detailed overview of his government's accomplishments over the past 12 months, discuss challenges, and offer solutions.President Barrow provided an overall positive assessment of his government’s performance. He shared that the economy has shown "remarkable resilience," growing nearly 6% while keeping inflation at 6.6%. This growth was largely driven by agriculture, construction, trade, and tourism.The President noted progress in infrastructure development, including the construction of hundreds of kilometres of roads across the country. These achievements, he stated, underscore his government's commitment to national development, highlighting that modern road, air, and maritime infrastructure are the "foundation and vehicle for sustainable socio-economic development."Regarding energy, the President announced that his government is on track to achieve universal electricity access with the commissioning of projects nationwide. He emphasised that this milestone makes The Gambia the first country in the subregion to attain such an achievement. He assured citizens that his government would continue to provide funding to Nawec (National Water and Electricity Company) and partner with stakeholders to ensure accessibility, reliability, and sustainability. "We have allocated three hundred and ninety-seven million dalasis (GMD 397 million) in the 2026 Budget to expand electricity services to the remaining unelectrified communities," he stated.The President also highlighted positive developments in the agricultural sector, which accounts for 22% of GDP, as it drives economic growth and empowers local communities. He noted an increase in food production last year, attributed largely to government support and investments in the sector. Additionally, there has been a significant expansion in access to clean drinking water, which has improved the lives and livelihoods of Gambians.In terms of peace and security, the President declared, "The Gambia is the safest and most peaceful country in West Africa," reflecting the growing confidence in national institutions and the unwavering commitment of security services to maintaining peace, security, and stability."The Gambia is now ranked the safest country in West Africa and the fourth safest in Africa, according to Business Insider Africa. This achievement demonstrates the increasing confidence in our national institutions and the steadfast dedication of our security services to safeguarding the country and its people," he asserted.The Gambian leader encouraged citizens to reflect on these achievements and to recommit themselves to the ideals and values of the Republic as represented in the recovery-focused National Development Plan, YIRIWA.He acknowledged the existing challenges facing the country, particularly in areas such as the economy, climate change, and the unpredictable global environment. He noted that Barra is strategically located as a gateway to the sub-region, and the provision of reliable, efficient, and modern ferry services will boost trade and facilitate the free movement of people.The Alkalo further urged ferry operators and management to ensure the safe and sustainable use of the ferry to effectively serve the public.This sentiment was echoed by the Chief of Lower Nuimi, George Sonko, who commended the President for taking decisive actions to address the challenges associated with ferry crossings. He also called on the ferry service to prioritise customer satisfaction by improving its services.The Governor of the North Bank Region, Lamin Saidykhan, spoke about the indispensable role of the Banjul-Barra ferry crossing in the socio-economic development of the country. He added that “this brand new green ferry will finally address the constraints associated with crossing.”The Regional Director of the African Development Bank, Dr Lamin Barrow, praised the long-standing partnership between the Bank and The Gambia, assuring that the African Development Bank will continue to support the government's efforts in enhancing sustainable socio-economic and infrastructural development.The Managing Director of the Gambia Ports Authority, Ousman Jobarteh, revealed that the Barra ferry was designed to meet the highest standards of shipbuilding and naval architecture. He added that the vessel is one of five components of the existing grant provided by the African Development Bank to The Gambia.President H.E. Adama Barrow stated that his government is committed to building robust transport infrastructure to foster socio-economic growth, describing the Banjul-Barra corridor as an essential pathway for The Gambia's sustained growth and development.The President lamented the persistent transportation challenges associated with this corridor in the past but expressed optimism that this new ferry will significantly improve services and facilitate transport.He thanked the African Development Bank for its support and assured that his government will continue to prioritise the Banjul-Barra route by providing a second ferry to augment the current fleet. President H.E. Adama Barrow joined the residents of Banjul at the King Fahd Mosque to perform prayers marking the Feast of Eid al-Fitr, locally known as Koriteh. This feast commemorates the end of Ramadan, the third pillar of Islam, during which Muslims fast for an entire month.Banjulians from across the city gathered at the King Fahd Mosque for the prayers, accompanied by Vice President H.E. Mohammed BS Jallow, Cabinet Ministers, Security Services Chiefs, and National Assembly Members.As is customary, President Barrow joined the congregation and was welcomed at the entrance of the mosque by Vice President Muhammed Jallow, Security Services Chiefs, and members of the Committee of Banjul Muslim Elders.Imam Ratib of Banjul, Alhaji Cherno Alieu Mass Kah, led the Eid prayers at the Banjul Central Mosque.After the two rak’ahs of prayer, Imam Ratib delivered a sermon in which he congratulated Muslims and all Gambians on the celebration of Koriteh, praying for the country and its leadership. He urged Muslims to be mindful of their religious obligations and to follow the tenets of Islam while also fostering peace, tranquillity, and good neighbourly relations.Following the prayers, the President was escorted out by his officials and the Elders of Banjul. Later in the day, President Barrow hosted a meeting at the State House with the Committee of Banjul Muslim Elders, the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, and other religious scholars to celebrate the occasion.

He praised the sports committee for organising what he referred to as a peaceful and highly competitive tournament.Sabally also revealed plans to expand the tournament to cover all regions of the country, drawing on the lessons learned from the ongoing tournament, which has attracted record attendance and excitement from young people.The organisers took this opportunity to invite the public to attend the final match this Sunday at the Serekunda West Mini Stadium, where the President is expected to be present.

GAMBIA REVENUE AUTHORITY LAUDED FOR CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE 

During the first Economic Council meeting, chaired by President Adama Barrow earlier this week, the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) received praise for its consistent performance over the years in mobilising revenue to drive growth and development.The GRA is essential to the government's operations, tasked by law with mobilising and administering tax revenue. This responsibility is significant and complex, and the GRA takes it very seriously.Under the leadership of Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe, the Authority has consistently met and even surpassed its annual revenue collection targets. This year is no different, with positive prospects already evident.The GRA's progress and performance stem from a strong commitment to reform. Commissioner Darboe has initiated various reforms aimed at maximising revenue, eliminating leakages, and enhancing efficiency. Notable initiatives include the introduction of a digital tax stamp and a fuel marking system to increase revenue.The Authority has also launched a single-window platform at all ports of entry and exit to track the transfer and transit of goods within The Gambia. All activities are monitored from the GRA headquarters, allowing officials to trace all movements and prevent the diversion of trucks and fuel tankers.This system is backed by dedicated infrastructure installed at the Banjul Ports, facilitating quick turnover and enabling businesses to clear goods within 24 hours. GRA staff can scan containers to determine their contents within minutes and digitally weigh trucks to assess volumes. Additionally, containers unloaded from ships can be electronically registered.With these systems in place, Mr Darboe believes innovation and digitalisation are key to the GRA's future. The Authority is already planning to introduce a centralised platform allowing taxpayers to pay all taxes online from the comfort of their homes or offices, eliminating the need to visit GRA offices in person.These improvements have reduced bureaucracy, enabling agents and businesses to clear containers from Banjul Port with ease and transparency. Rafael Mendy, the GRA's seaport manager, emphasises that these developments highlight the Authority's commitment to service, transparency, and accountability.Another ambitious initiative, the Rental Income Tax, is already making an impact by transforming the collection and management of rent tax in The Gambia. This initiative covers properties within the Kanifing Municipality and Brikama Area Council and has seen revenue surge from D92 million at its launch in October last year to D139 million this month.All these advancements aim to maximise revenue collection, enhance efficiency, and promote transparency. The GRA's vision as a public institution is to empower taxpayers to take greater responsibility in assessing their tax obligations.Commissioner Darboe credits these successes to the political will and leadership of the President, who has been highly supportive of the Authority. He looks to the future with renewed confidence that the GRA will continue to sustainably mobilise revenue to drive socio-economic and infrastructural development in an atmosphere of peace and stability.The Economic Council meets monthly to discuss economic issues, review the performance of state institutions and agencies, and provide advice to the President and his government on economic matters.

She expressed her sincere gratitude to the Al-Ataa Foundation for their support, stating that this donation would greatly enhance the capacity of health facilities and improve healthcare service delivery across the country.Ahmed El Agamy, the Director of Baitul Maal Foundation, also expressed deep gratitude to the president for his support of the foundation. He noted that this container of medical items is the first donation made to The Gambia but assured that the foundation would continue to support the country's health sector. This council comprises representatives from the central government, various agencies, and the private sector, and it is tasked with advising the President on economic matters, including management and performance.In attendance were the Vice President, the Ministers of Finance and Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Food Security, and Trade, Industry, Employment and Regional Integration. Additionally, attendees included the Commissioner General of the Gambia Revenue Authority, the Director General of The Gambia Import and Export Promotion Agency, the Governor of the Central Bank of The Gambia, and the head of The Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry.During the opening ceremony, President Barrow emphasised the council's significant role in the country's socio-economic development and encouraged its members to prioritise economic stability.The Vice President also praised the council for its advisory role on critical economic issues and urged all stakeholders to collaborate in enhancing socio-economic stability.

TEAM GAMBIA RECEIVES WARM WELCOME FROM DIASPORA AHEAD OF COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Team Gambia has received a warm welcome from the Gambian community in Scotland ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.The Gambian Association in Scotland, in collaboration with the Gambia High Commission in the UK and the Commonwealth Sports Association, hosted a special reception dubbed “Gambia Day” in Glasgow. The event brought together athletes, officials, members of the diaspora, government representatives, and sports administrators in a celebration of national unity and support for Team Gambia.It was the first time a Gambian sports delegation competing at an international event formally met members of the diaspora. The gathering provided athletes, coaches, and officials the opportunity to interact directly with Gambians living in Scotland, share experiences, and strengthen the bond between the national team and the diaspora.Attending the event were Minister of Youth and Sports Bakary Y. Badjie; The Gambia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Dr Fatou Bensouda; Chief of Mission Bakary Jammeh; and senior officials of the Gambia National Olympic Committee.Chief of Mission Bakary Jammeh, who chaired the ceremony, expressed appreciation to the Gambian community in Scotland for their hospitality.He described the occasion as a reflection of the power of sport to unite people. “Sports transcends boundaries and brings communities together through a shared passion and common purpose,” he said.Minister Bakary Y. TEAM GAMBIA’S SWIMMING CAMPAIGN BEGINS AT 2026 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Team Gambia’s swimming campaign got underway at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Saturday, with Ousman Jobe and Pap D. Jonga representing the nation in Heat 3 at Tollcross International Swimming Centre.While both swimmers fell short of advancing, the race marked another step forward for Gambian aquatics on the international stage.The duo competed in a fast men’s sprint heat. Tonga’s Alan Uhiafi touched first in 24.42 seconds, followed by Vanuatu’s John Lebot in 25.83.For The Gambia, Olympian Ousman Jobe placed 7th in Lane 6 with a time of 27.52 seconds. Pap D. Jonga finished 8th in Lane 2 in 28.30 seconds. Both were just off their seed times.Anticipation was high in the Gambian camp ahead of the race. Jobe came into Glasgow fresh off an intensive two-month training camp in Paris.“There’s been some major championships here before, in the 2014 Commonwealth Games as well. I’ve prepared so well,” Jobe said.“Plus, two months ago, I was in Paris preparing for this. So I think I’m fully ready.”While both missed out on personal bests, Jonga reflected on Glasgow’s world-class facilities and what it will take to develop talent in The Gambia.“If in The Gambia a supportive system can be created in terms of creating a swimming pool, swimming has a long way to go,” Jonga said.“Having at least a standard 25-meter pool will enable young kids who are trying to involve themselves in swimming to have big potential for tomorrow.”Though Heat 3 marks the end of this event, the Games are far from over for Team Gambia. Jonga said the race was a chance to review and improve.“The performance was great, but it could have been much better. I will use this moment to progress on the few events coming up... to do a review of what went wrong and enable me to have better timing in the races coming up,” he said.Jobe and Jonga return to the pool on Monday and Tuesday for the 100-meter freestyle and 50-meter butterfly, taking vital lessons from Glasgow’s 50-meter pool into their remaining races.

GINA BASS ADVANCES TO 100M SEMIS AS OUSMAN JOBE SETS NATIONAL RECORD AT COMMONWEALTH GAMES

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Team Gambia at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, as sprint star Gina Mariam Bass Bittaye booked her place in the women’s 100 metres semi-finals, while swimmer Ousman Jobe set a new Gambian national record.Africa’s sprint queen produced a confident performance to finish 2nd in her 100m heat in 11.22 seconds, comfortably securing a spot in the last 16.Speaking after the race, Bass said she was pleased with the result despite the cold weather.“Qualification was the priority in the opening round, not speed,” the Gambian star said.She remains quietly confident ahead of the semi-finals.The competition ended in the heats for the rest of Team Gambia’s sprinters.Commonwealth Games debutant Isatou Sey clocked 11.73 seconds, short of her personal best of 11.61. She blamed the weather but called the experience valuable.“Competing at the Games has been a great learning experience,” Sey said.Nyimansata Jawneh also bowed out after recording 11.68 seconds, leaving Bass as The Gambia’s sole representative in the women’s sprint semi-finals.In the men’s 100m, Alieu Joof ran 10.52 seconds while veteran Ebrima Camara clocked a season’s best of 10.29 seconds. Both narrowly missed out on qualification.Camara, competing at his third consecutive Commonwealth Games, reflected on a tough season.“I’m not really satisfied with it, but I thank God because I’ve had a very tough season with injuries,” Camara said.“Since recovering, every race I’ve been getting better. This is my third Commonwealth Games. Not everybody gets the opportunity to represent their country three times over twelve years. So I really thank God for that.”In the swimming pool, Pap D. Jonga and Ousman Jobe were unable to advance from the men’s 100m freestyle.However, Jobe made history by stopping the clock at 1:01.34, setting a new Gambian national record in the event. While the time was not enough to progress, it marked a major personal achievement and another step forward for competitive swimming in The Gambia.With athletics and swimming competitions now underway, all eyes turn to Gina Mariam Bass as she carries The Gambia’s hopes into the women’s 100m semi-finals, aiming to secure a place in the final and challenge for Commonwealth honours.

President Adama Barrow on Saturday urged young people to prepare for the future, telling hundreds of youth at the 2026 Youth Innovation Summit that “the future belongs to those who prepare for it.”The President was speaking at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, where several hundred young people from organisations across the country gathered for the annual summit.The Youth Innovation Summit brings young people together to discuss relevant issues, share ideas, and challenge the realities shaping youth affairs and the future of The Gambia.It serves as a platform for youth empowerment and fosters collaboration between young people and government.Key sponsor Comium said it believes youth are The Gambia’s greatest resource. “The country’s future depends on how we prepare young people to thrive in a digital-driven world,” said Isatou Ceesay, Comium’s Director of Marketing and Communications.A highlight of the summit was the story of Ebrima Jallow, a young man who once embarked on the perilous journey to Europe. Now a successful entrepreneur, Jallow was given the podium to inspire participants.He stands as living proof that Gambians can succeed at home.In his address, President Barrow recounted his own journey to Europe as a young man, with the belief that it was the only way to live a better life. He later realised that success could also be found at home.He used the lesson to encourage young people that with the right mindset, they can make it in The Gambia.The President assured youth that their development remains central to his government’s agenda, citing the construction of schools and TVET centres across the country to empower them.“It is government’s responsibility to ensure hope for our youth,” Barrow said. “That is why we are investing in agriculture and other sectors.”He urged young people to reject drugs, embrace innovation, and maintain peace, reiterating: “The future belongs to those who prepare for it.”Critical conversations at the summit centred on: Irregular migration and reintegration. Civic education, participation, and national cohesion. Youth empowerment, skills development, and entrepreneurship.Giving the vote of thanks on behalf of the Organising Committee, Maimuna Platt described the day as “an unforgettable day of learning among youths” and said it marks the beginning of more innovation and collaboration for nation building.

PRESIDENT BARROW PRESENTS VEHICLES TO NPP-LED GRAND COALITION PARTNERS AHEAD OF DECEMBER POLL

President Adama Barrow on Saturday presented a fleet of vehicles to partner parties of the NPP-led Grand Coalition during a ceremony held at State House. The presentation was attended by leaders of the Alliance parties and senior members of the National People’s Party executive.Representatives of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), ANRD, NRP, NCP, Democratic Party, Citizens Alliance, GPDP, and GMC received keys to the new vehicles. The vehicles are expected to enhance grassroots mobilisation ahead of the December 5th Presidential election.The leaders of the 8 parties expressed appreciation to the President and leader of the Grand Coalition, saying the gesture will strengthen the Alliance. They predicted a landslide victory for President Barrow, describing him as development-oriented and committed to national progress.Isatou Jifanga Jarju of the APRC assured that the vehicles will be used for their intended purpose.Mai Ahmad Fatty of the Gambia Moral Congress (GMC) said the Grand Coalition is strong and well-positioned to win the election, citing what he called the President’s “life-changing development projects” across the country.Dr Ismaila Ceesay of the Citizens Alliance urged beneficiaries to intensify grassroots mobilisation to strengthen the Grand Coalition. He said President Barrow will win with an overwhelming majority based on his track record over the last 9 years.GPDP leader Henry Gomez described the presentation as unprecedented in Gambian politics. “President Barrow respects his coalition partners and always supports them when necessary,” Gomez said. “Therefore, let us work together and speak with one voice to strengthen the Alliance.” He also called on Gambians to support the President and vote for him massively in December to ensure continuity of development.Leaders of the NCP, ANRD, and DP echoed similar sentiments, calling on all partner parties to vigorously campaign and mobilise support for the NPP-led Alliance.NRP leader Hamat N.K. Bah cautioned all beneficiary parties against misusing the vehicles, stressing that they are strictly for campaign purposes. He urged Alliance members to reach out to voters across the country.Bah also praised President Barrow’s development record, which he said has touched the lives of citizens nationwide. He challenged young people to support the President and avoid politicians who mislead them for selfish political goals.“There will be no shortcut to the Presidency,” Bah warned. “Government will not allow any individual or group to undermine the electoral process. A level playing field has already been ensured for all.”First Deputy National President of the NPP, Demba Sabally, said the presentation signifies President Barrow’s recognition of the important role of Alliance parties in strengthening the Grand Coalition. He urged them to redouble efforts and maintain unity to ensure victory for the Alliance.In his remarks, President Barrow described the event as a historic milestone in the country’s political evolution, noting it is the first time members of a coalition are receiving such support from the leading party.He called on all recipients to use the vehicles solely for political purposes to mobilise voters at the grassroots for the Grand Coalition.
