Continue Reading >>The Gamba Radio and Television Services (GRTS) has finalised plans to provide live coverage of The Gambia's football match against the Republic of South Sudan in the current qualifying rounds of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Tournament. The match will be played in the Senegalese city of Thies today, kicking off at 4:00 p.m. To facilitate this coverage, the national broadcaster has deployed a large consignment of equipment and vehicles as well as a large team of technicians and Managers. GRTS' Director General, Mr. Malick Jeng, who is also in Thies to witness the operation, commended the staff for their expertise, dedication, hard work and sacrifice. The DG, who is returning from an official mission to Dakar, also thanked his Senegalese counterpart, Racine Talla, for deploying a significant amount of equipment and personnel to support the GRTS operation under the terms of an existing Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions. DG Jeng said GRTS was covering the match as a national duty but also under the terms of a contract signed with the Confederation of African football (CAF).

The Belgian was responding to questions at pre match press conference in Thies. The coach described South Sudan as a we'll motivated side and the scorpions needs to be on their guard. Coach Saintfiet expressed disappointment over the absence of some big players. He said understands some may be nursing injuries but others have placed club commitments over nation. The Scorpions who were on the back of a one-nil victory against South Sudan in their first game were hoping for a second win against Congo who lost four zero to Mali in their first game. Antoine Makoumbou scored a 74th-minute screamer from outside the box to earn Congo the three points. The Scorpions will now wait until September when they will travel to Mali for the third game before hosting Mali again in the fourth round in the same month.

A population of about two million is eager for similar excitement as the Scorpions set to renew their commitment with both eyes fixed on a return to the Africa Cup of Nations. Preparations for the 2023 qualifiers have reached the climax with a venue for the Gambia's first game being identified, the squad being named and a training camp organised for the team. Gambia's squad for the game against South Sudan and Congo is already in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where they are invited for a test game against the UAE. A game that ended 1 - 1 as Musa Barrow scored an equaliser for the visitors in the second half. The Scorpions used it as a preparatory camp before they fly to Senegal to play South Sudan on 4th June and Congo on June 8th in Brazzaville. This could be a usual campaign for the players, but not the supporters who will have to miss the home games of their team for now. Hopes are high that this could well be another successful qualifier for the Scorpions who promised the nation a return to the AFCON. And Tom certainly had the personnel that can fulfill that promise. This could be another glittering campaign. The Squad For Sudan & Congo Games: Gambia's coach Tom Saintfiet's style of player selection always allows his critics to load their ammunition and fire at him. The narrative stay as usual after the coach named his squad for the Sudan game. It appears as if the coach is now so accustomed to criticism. The Belgian invited 25 players that excluding some notable names some of who were instrumental during the AFCON in Cameroon. Explaining his reasons, Tom said those players are either injured or demanded to be excused for the first two games. According to Tom in an interview with AfriRadio, Steve Trawallly, Saidy Janko, Ebou Adams, and Noah Sonko Sundberg all requested to be left out, while Ebrima Colley and Ali Sowe are said to be injured and Hamza Barry who was included is said to miss the first two games due to passport issue. The Scorpions further went on to lose two players Modou Secka Barrow and Dembo Darboe to injury, they are replaced with Nuha Marong and Bun Sanneh (the only home-based player). So long as it may be agreed that so much quality is lost by missing those players, it can equally be agreed that there is some much quality on the list to bank on. With the return of Ablie Jallow, added to, Musa Barrow and Assan Ceesay who is in red hot form. Rocky centre-backs in Omar Colley and James Gomez and dynamic midfielders like Sulayman Marreh, Ebrima Darbo, and Yusupha Bobb can all help Tom have it his way against Sudan as the players have a greater understanding of the Belgian pragmatic tactical approaches. The Unusual: This generation of the Scorpions supporters is faced with something unusual as both FIFA and CAF agreed that The Gambia doesn't have the infrastructure that is fit for purpose, as such they've been banned from hosting international matches. This forced the Gambia Football Federation to negotiate with Senegal for The Gambia to host their home games. That massive crowd might not be seen when the Scorpions play, even though some economically strong supporters will still travel and GFF will be able to generate some little income from the little tickets they will sell. A massive loss for the country morally and economically, but this might not affect the performance of the team as demonstrated in their previous ties outside like against Algeria, DR Congo, and Angola where the Scorpions showed outstanding displays without their supporters. Hopes Most of the Scorpions players have enjoyed some fortune with their clubs and hopes are high that they can carry along the same luck to the Scorpions camp and make their campaign a fortunate one. The Scorpions are drawn in the same group as Congo, Mali, and South Sudan, which is not a more so difficult group judging by the recent form and achievement of the three teams. Scorpions could be buoyed by the recent underachievement of their opponents and build on that. South Sudan who were admitted into CAF as recently as 2012, never qualify in their attempts in 2015 and 2021. Congo who last played the AFCON in 2015 where they finished as a quarterfinalist, were hit with misfortune since then and they were unable to qualify for the past three editions.Mali the most consistent side in the group in terms of appearance since 2008 played in all the editions since then but the far they could go in the past two editions was a Round of 16 finish. This indicates that the Scorpions who finished as quarterfinalists in the last edition in Cameroon have had a more recent success than their opponents. Analytically, their chances of advancing from this group are high.

This was a preparatory game for both sides as The Gambia is set to begin the campaign for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers on June 4th against South Sudan, while UAE is preparing for their World Cup playoff first tie with Australia. In what was a fairly balanced game, the Scorpions found themselves behind after 38th minutes when Ali Mabkhout converted from the penalty spot after a foul by Muhammed Sanneh. The culprit Muhammed Sanneh then made amends for his error as he set up Musa Barrow who converted from a close range to draw the visitors back on level terms in the 48th minute. The remaining minutes couldn’t bring anything meaningful for both sides as they settled for a stalemate 1 – 1 draw. This was the first time the Scorpions snatch a point against a team outside the African continent, a morale booster for Tom and his charges as they set to travel to Senegal for their 2023 AFCON qualifiers opener with South Sudan on 4th June, before heading to Congo for their second games slated for June 8th, 2022.

According to the GFF, thirty participants across the country, including 23 females and 7 male Referees are taking part. Among the participants, Four are FIFA-approved female Referees and 26 national Referees. President Lamin Kaba Bajo spoke of the significance his office attaches to the development of more Women Referees. He encouraged the Referees Association to continue empowering women in the trade. GFF Senior Women's Football Coordinator Mrs. Sainey Sissohore Mboge and Ramou Ndow a member of the Women's Football Committee both expressed gratitude to the Federation. Mrs. M'Boge encouraged the participants to exhibit more patience, passion, and commitment to the course. FIFA Technical Instructor Mr. Ali Mohamed Ahmed urged participants to make the best use of the opportunity.

The Gambia Volleyball Federation announced that Eight Volleyball clubs from the Gambia and Senegal will take part. Reigning champions Serekunda East and Gamtel/Gamcel will represent The Gambia in the male category and Police and GAF in the women category. Soccocim and Saltigue in the female category and AFSA in the male category will represent Senegal. An All beach volleyball day will be held at Palma Rima beach on the 29th of May.
Continue Reading >>The Gambia Football Federation on Thursday officially launched a broadcast agreement signed with the world football governing body FIFA a forthright ago. The agreement is to live stream first division male and female league matches through FIFA+ Project. Lamin Kaba Bajo the president of GFF claims that clubs will benefit from the contract which runs from 2022 to 2026. He said 20% of the revenue will be paid to GFF. It’s not clear how much will be paid to clubs and how the revenue paid to GFF will be distributed to clubs. GFF disclosed that EyeAfrica TV is the broadcast partner that will produce the matches and send signals to “Eleven Sports”, the Sports Channel that will live stream the games. This is set to start with a few selected games in this current season. The Federation said from next season, no broadcast entity in the Gambia or outside will be allowed to broadcast the games live on radio or TV. GFF believes the deal will help sell Gambian players to the international market and also boost the socio-economic advancement of the teams. FIFA launched FIFA+ in April to provide access to live football matches from all its members and is available on all web and mobile devices.
Continue Reading >>The Gambia Football Federation(GFF) says that the Gambia will take on South Sudan in the 2023 Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations home leg qualifier on Saturday 4th June 2022 at the Stade Lat Dior in Thies, Senegal. GFF announced on its social media handle that its delegation went to Senegal to make logistical arrangements for the game. The GFF team met the Senegalese Minister of Sports and the Stadium Management to discuss elements of the organisation of the match. These include security, protocols, and spectator entrance on the match day. GFF says the reason for the Gambia playing in Thies instead of the much-fancied Stade Abdoulaye wade stadium is because the Terranga Lions will be playing at their den on the same day.
