On the sidelines of his visit to the Republic of the Congo, President Adama Barrow met with representatives of the Gambian Association in Brazzaville. The meeting created space for discussions on national issues and the challenges facing the community, where thousands of Gambians have lived for decades.
Community head and Consular Saikou Jawara thanked President Barrow for the visit, saying it reinforces the bonds of friendship and brotherhood between Congo and The Gambia. He described Gambians in Brazzaville as peaceful, united, and law-abiding, a reputation he said has earned them respect from local authorities. Jawara noted that residents spent hours at the airport to welcome the President. He appealed for government support to facilitate passports and ID cards to help members regularise their immigration status and access jobs.
Demba Cham, an executive member of the association, echoed the request. He praised Barrow for development initiatives back home, saying the community has been following The Gambia’s infrastructure and electricity expansion projects closely. Cham called the projects evidence of the government’s commitment to improving lives and urged the President to help Gambians in Congo obtain national documents.
Foreign Affairs Minister Serign Modou Njie commended the community for the welcome given to the President and his delegation. He said Gambians in Congo had shown patriotism and love for the country’s leadership and reassured them that the government would look into their concerns.
President Barrow expressed gratitude to the community for turning out in large numbers at the airport. He advised them to remain united, hardworking, and respectful of the host country’s laws. The President said The Gambia has undergone unprecedented transformation, crediting democracy for restoring trust and opening new opportunities with development partners.
“As the President, I love The Gambia more than anyone else because The Gambia is my project, and I am happy when Gambians are happy,” Barrow told the gathering. He cited roads built to last a century as part of his legacy. He urged the community to organise and compile a list of eligible citizens so the government can dispatch teams to issue national documents, in line with policy.
In the December election, Barrow pledged to hold a “free, fair and peaceful election” and to “respect the outcome of the vote.” He added that The Gambia, under his leadership, has seen remarkable progress in infrastructure and electricity, with more developments planned in the coming years.
Closing the meeting, the President declared himself an honorary member of the association and promised to forward his contributions as a gesture of support and goodwill to Gambians in Congo Brazzaville.

He disclosed that 500 Gambian students, including 20 women, are currently enrolled in Saudi universities pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in Islamic Studies, Engineering, and Public Administration.Mr Jeng thanked the Gambian Embassy for its support but appealed to the government to increase scholarship opportunities, expand consular services, and support their initiative to build a library in Jambur.President of The Gambian Association in Saudi Arabia, Manjai Ceesay, appealed for government intervention to facilitate access to residence and work permits to enable Gambians to secure jobs and move freely.Representatives of women in the community, Adama Jallow and Fatumata Jatta, highlighted challenges with Iqama and Nusuk permits. Ms Jallow said many Gambians are denied entry into Makkah during Hajj for lack of permits, restricting movement and business activities.Ms Jatta described the concerns as pressing and urged President Barrow to engage Saudi authorities for favourable terms. She, however, noted that Gambians are widely respected in the Kingdom for being law-abiding and peaceful.She added that the community association remains strong and often supports members in difficult situations through contributions.Consul General in Jeddah, Ebou Ndure, acknowledged the challenges but explained that they affect many communities due to evolving Saudi laws.“As diplomats, we are also guided by strict laws which we must abide by,” Mr Ndure said. He noted that Hajj regulations now require specific documents for entry into Makkah, and the Consulate has no authority to circumvent Saudi immigration procedures.Mr Ndure reassured that the government will continue engaging Saudi counterparts to ease the challenges and will provide consular services in emergencies.Ambassador H.E. Mambury Njie said issues around Iqama and Nusuk also affect Embassy staff. He stated that the Embassy is working on a roadmap to streamline scholarship access and is engaging authorities to facilitate biometric passports.In response, President Barrow underscored the importance of dialogue in addressing community concerns. He thanked Gambians for their patriotism and urged them to reach out to the Embassy and Consulate with issues.The President reminded the community that immigration laws evolve and it is important to adjust to ensure a safe and legal stay.“Our government prioritises the welfare of citizens wherever they may live,” President Barrow said. “We will continue to engage our Saudi counterparts at all levels to secure favourable terms for Gambians.”He encouraged Gambians to return home and take advantage of opportunities, citing major investments in education. Over the last 9 years, he said, the government has transformed the University of The Gambia into a modern institution offering programs up to PhD level with 8,000 students. A high-level delegation from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, led by Assistant Secretary General H.E. Ambassador Tarig Ali Bakhit Saleh, on Wednesday held talks with President His Excellency Adama Barrow in Jeddah.The meeting focused on key issues affecting the Islamic Ummah and the role of the OIC under President Barrow’s chairmanship.Ambassador Saleh commended The Gambia for its principled stance in defending the rights of the Rohingya people at the International Court of Justice. As current Chairman of the OIC, President Barrow was also briefed on the organisation’s activities and strategic plans for the future.Speaking to GRTS after the closed-door meeting, Ambassador Saleh described the engagement as "very productive."“The Gambia plays and continues to play a very important role in joint Islamic action and solidarity, and this has been appreciated by the membership of the OIC and the General Secretariat,” he said.He described The Gambia as a very important member of the OIC, noting that since hosting the OIC Summit in 2024, the country has undertaken several initiatives to support the organisation’s work.The discussions also centred on the Rohingya issue, where The Gambia is leading the case at the ICJ.“We had a very intensive discussion on this issue and hopefully will continue the discussion with The Gambia on the way forward and how to proceed on this important cause of the Rohingya people,” Ambassador Saleh said.The delegation and President Barrow also addressed the ongoing war in the Middle East and its potential to destabilise the region. His Excellency President Adama Barrow and his delegation have arrived in the Holy City of Makkah from Medina to perform Umrah, the lesser pilgrimage.Dressed in Ihram, a symbol of purity and humility, the President and his delegation travelled to Makkah aboard a two-hour train journey to Islam’s holiest city.Consular Ebou Ndure said the trip to Makkah marks the climax of the President’s spiritual journey, which has so far included visits to the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, Masjid al-Quba, and the Mountains of Uhud.Inside the VIP coach, the atmosphere was calm and reflective, filled with religious chants as the President reaffirmed his intention to perform Umrah in accordance with Islamic teachings and traditions.On arrival in Makkah, President Barrow was received by officials from the Royal Palace and escorted to the Royal Guest House overlooking the Holy Kaaba.Shortly after, he was led to Masjid Al-Haram to begin the Umrah rites. The President first performed Maghrib prayers at the Holy Kaaba alongside members of his delegation.He then proceeded to perform Tawaf, circling the Holy Kaaba seven times, aboard specially designated vehicles reserved for heads of state and dignitaries.Following Tawaf, President Barrow performed Sa’i, walking between Safa and Marwa. The nearly 2km journey, completed seven times, relives the footsteps of Hajara, wife of Prophet Ibrahim, who made the same trek in search of water for her son, Prophet Ismail.After completing all prescribed rituals, the President returned to the Kaaba to perform Ishaa congregational prayers, marking the conclusion of the Umrah rites.President Barrow was later escorted back to the Royal Guest House. He is expected to travel to Jeddah for a series of engagements, including a meeting with members of the Gambian community in Saudi Arabia.

President Adama Barrow on Friday received a high-level delegation from the African Development Bank Group, led by its President Dr Sidi Ould Tah, at State House. The two sides reviewed the existing partnership between The Gambia and the AfDB and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in infrastructure, electricity, and other priority development areas.Dr Ould Tah was accompanied to the State House by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Sidi Keita. Speaking to reporters after the talks, the AfDB President expressed appreciation to President Barrow for The Gambia’s strong support to the Bank and for the “fruitful partnership over the years.”Dr Ould Tah reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to continue supporting The Gambia to deliver on key sectors and projects aimed at improving the quality of life and livelihoods of citizens. Over 730 young women graduate from SWEDD+ entrepreneurship training and receive D50,000 – D75,000 business grantsPresident Adama Barrow has said no country can realise its full potential without investing in women and girls, as The Gambia certified 730 beneficiaries under the Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend Plus Project, SWEDD+. Speaking at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, the President said families thrive and communities grow stronger when women are supported. The ceremony recognised women and girls aged 15-24 who completed a three-month entrepreneurship training program under SWEDD+, implemented by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare.The five-year project targets out-of-school women and girls to improve livelihoods, skills, and economic independence.A total of D117 million has been earmarked for more than 2,000 young women under the project. For this first cohort of over 700 graduands, each will receive between D50,000 and D75,000 in business grants.The Ministry has set aside D32 million to be disbursed directly to the new graduates to start or expand their businesses. Cheques and certificates were presented to regional representatives at the event.Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare described the event as a “milestone” toward economic independence for beneficiaries. He commended President Barrow for advancing gender equality, noting that the skills gained will “open doors” for the graduates.Alpha Humma, Project Manager for the Women Enterprise Fund, said the training will enable graduands to contribute meaningfully to society. Five state-owned enterprises, SOEs, handed over cheques totalling D137 million in dividend payments to President H.E. Adama Barrow at a ceremony held at State House on Tuesday. The unprecedented development marks a milestone in government-SOE relations, following reforms aimed at making the enterprises more profitable, better managed, and financially viable.For the first time in The Gambia’s history, SOEs lined up at State House not to request bailouts, but to return dividends worth over D130 million to the President.Board chairpersons, managing directors, and officials of the State-Owned Enterprises Commission gathered in the Cabinet Room to witness the ceremony. The five SOEs and their contributions were:1. Gambia Ports Authority: D70 million.2. Gambia National Petroleum Corporation: D50 million.3. Gambia Civil Aviation Authority: D5 million.4. Gambia Publishing and Printing Corporation: D5 million.5. The Gambia Radio and Television Services: D2 million.Chief of Staff to the President, Alieu Loum, who chaired the event, described it as unique. “The SOEs have fulfilled their obligations to government and to Gambians,” he said.The Chairman of the SOE Commission, Ousainou Ngum, said since the commission’s establishment three years ago, there has been remarkable improvement in the operations, management, and performance of state enterprises. He expressed hope that this transformation will continue, starting with this first dividend payment. The National People's Party and its coalition partners organised a mega rally on Saturday in Brikama to whip up support ahead of the December 5th Presidential election. The rally which attracted thousands of supporters from across the West Coast Region unanimously endorsed the President and NPP leader H.E. Adama Barrow as the candidate for the election. The mega rally is seen as the biggest political gathering Brikama has witnessed in recent years. It underscores the ruling party's resolve to consolidate its grip on The Gambia's political landscape.The National People's Party and its coalition partners staged a massive political rally in Brikama, West Coast Region drawing thousands of supporters in what organisers described as the biggest political rally ever organised by a political party.Supporters flooded the main highway leading to the SSP park in great excitement, whilst inside the venue itself party executive members, coalition party leaders and supporters kept a lively atmosphere waiting for the arrival of the President and party leader H.E. Adama Barrow.A moment later President Barrow made a triumphant entry into Brikama escorted by jubilant crowds who escorted his motorcade into the venue.His arrival marked the beginning of the mega rally, which was preceded by the unveiling of the party manifesto, nine-point plan and digital platforms a day earlier.The mega rally was organised by the Regional Executive Committee of the NPP in partnership with its coalition allies to drum up support for President Barrow's candidacy for the upcoming December 5th Presidential election.More than a dozen NPP party members at the regional, constituency and ward levels spoke at the rally, underscoring the need for concerted efforts to secure a landslide victory for President Barrow.They all pointed to his development track record in the areas of infrastructure, education, health care, electricity, women and youth empowerment and governance reforms as evidence of his commitment to the peace and welfare of the country. They all warned against voting for the opposition, which lacks the experience, foresight and resources to match President Barrow's development track record, adding that the country will be better off with President Barrow at the helm.The speakers also spoke of President Barrow's peaceful disposition, his tolerance and commitment to democracy as proof that he is the best candidate for the job, warning that the opposition risks nullifying the gains already registered under President Barrow.Therefore, they all called for a general mobilisation of people, particularly the youth and women to give President Barrow a landslide victory in December. Several other allied party leaders including Dr Ismaila Ceesay of the Citizens’ Alliance and Hamat NK Bah of the NRP endorsed President Barrow at the rally. Dr Ceesay spoke highly of the President and his achievements over the last 9 years, arguing that Gambians should vote for continuity. He called on the youths in particular to shun violence, and indiscipline and participate fully in the national development process. He advised the youth to respect constituted authority and desist from any unlawful activity that could endanger peace, security and stability. The Citizens Alliance leader also cautioned against the politics of hate and deception, arguing that elections are more than just rhetoric and propaganda on social media but concrete outcomes that improve the lives and the livelihoods of the people. He praised the coalition as the only viable force that can bring development for the people adding that Gambians are now politically aware to make informed choices.The NRP leader on the other hand defended the government's handling of the electricity crisis, noting that over the last 9 years, the government has invested resources to ensure a stable, reliable and accessible electricity supply across the country. He reassured that President Barrow will address the current problems associated with supply, as his government has carefully taken stock of the issues involved. Hamat Bah described President Barrow as the most experienced politician amongst his opponents, arguing that he has the pedigree, integrity and modesty to lead the country into the future. Senior executive members of the NPP namely Musa Drammeh the National President, Dr Demba Sabally the 1st Deputy President and Maimuna Baldeh the National Women’s Mobiliser, all called on the supporters to renew their commitment and loyalty to President Barrow. They described this year’s election as crucial as it will decide the country's fate for the next five years. They expressed confidence in President Barrow to lead the coalition to victory in December, judging by this unprecedented turnout, which will sow fear in the opposition. The leaders dismissed the opposition calls for term limits, noting that the constitution allows President Barrow to seek as many terms as he would like. The rally also witnessed the defection of several hundred people from the opposition into the NPP. Dou Sanno, a political adviser to the President paraded the purported defectors to President Barrow which was hailed as a victory for the NPP and a blow to the opposition in the West Coast Region. The mega rally climaxed with President Barrow's address in which he extended gratitude to the regional party structures for organising such a massive rally. The President recalled how in 2016 he addressed his first political rally in Brikama which marked the beginning of his political journey. He therefore expressed confidence that this rally will mark the beginning of his re-election bid in which he vowed to defeat his opponents in a landslide. President Barrow described the 2026 election as unprecedented as he could potentially face 4 former vice presidents. He however remained confident that he will defeat them either individually or in a coalition, as he knows his opponents all too well. He lashed at his political opponents for using the current electricity crisis as a political tool to attract votes, arguing that his government has a good track record in electrifying the country over the last 9 years. He described the current electricity problem as a technical issue which is being sorted out, and advised the opposition not to use it as a campaign strategy. The President pledged to continue on his development trajectory if re-elected, promising to increase workers’ salaries by 30% next year.Speaking about the NPP and its coalition partners, President Barrow called on his supporters to remain focused on the bigger picture as they are the biggest and strongest political force in The Gambia.
